What You Can Expect.

Physical Therapy for Balance

  1. Thorough evaluation to figure out why you are having a balance problem.
  2. Specific exercises designed to address the reason you have a balance problem.
  3. We either work to fix it or compensate for it.
    1. If you have no sensation in your feet or poor vision that cannot be corrected then we compensate by strengthening your intact vestibular system and/or by teaching you how to use a cane or walker appropriately.
    2. If you have a weak vestibular system (equilibrium) we help you to strengthen it with exercise.
    3. Vestibular exercises involve putting your balance to work by challenging your balance.
    4. Most exercises are done standing or with walking.
    5. Exercises are typically done 3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
  4. Any doctor can send you for therapy. A prescription for Physical Therapy evaluation and treatment is required by most insurance. The diagnosis that most insurance prefer is “Abnormality of Gait”.
  5. Typically patients come to therapy 2 times a week for 2 months.
  6. Success is primarily based on dedication to the home exercise program.
  7. ORA's therapists have a greater than a 90% success rate.
